Shattered Glass: Vandals damage car windows at east side apartment complex

MADISON (WKOW) – More than half a dozen neighbors at an apartment complex on Madison’s east side woke up to a scary surprise:  BB gun holes in their car windows.

“Disturbing for sure,” Dad Zach Walhovd said.  He was planning to give his 16-year old son a older model Ford Taurus as a Christmas present.

“It was the first day that it was parked in the parking lot, that night the back window got busted.”

Walhovd’s new vehicle wasn’t the only one targeted at The Meadows Apartments.

“It’s an inconvenience for people it’s a quality of life issue,”  Madison Police Spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

“So if you look at what his damages are and you multiply that by seven because we know there were seven cars were hit by BB’s, we know these people will have to shell out cash or work through their insurance.”

Walhovd says he plans to pay out of pocket, but that’s not easy.

“This close to Christmas, to have to spend an extra $600 to put another window in is kind of tight this time of year,”  Walhovd said.

“you have all this holiday shopping to come up with another 5 hundred bucks is frustrating,” he added.

He says he’ll keep a much better eye on the Christmas present by keeping it under a light, directly infront of his apartment to “just give me a little more protection.”

After three decades at the Meadow Street Apartment, he says he’s had some vandalism before but nothing quite as bad.

“I’m not scared, I’m mad.”

Madison Police believe the suspects are juveniles.  They are asking anyone with information on the crime to contact Crimestoppers.
